What prompted you to apply to the graduate scheme?
"Honestly, I was just looking at jobs around Nottingham that matched my skill sets. I liked the idea of going into a more business-focused job. Originally, I was looking at being a psychologist, but towards the end of my course, I thought I'd explore another route. When I learned more about Columbus and prepared for the interview, I thought it seemed like a really good company - I was right!"
How was the learning part?
"We all built our own company in D365 F&O, which really gives you a full idea of how businesses operate and also the role you play as a Consultant in improving them. It was Covid, so unfortunately I didn't get to go to Denmark for the residential, but along with the qualifications we did, we all had to complete set processes that touched different areas of the system, like finance and sales orders, role profiles. It helped us get an idea of the system's various areas, and the clients we'd be working with and decide which area we preferred to specialise in."
What was your first project?
"I started in September 2019, so it's been four years now. I started off just doing literally one day on a project, if I remember. The Senior Business Consultant on the project couldn't make a session for some reason, so the LSA asked if I wanted to join him on-site. So I did, and I was taking care of little bits and bobs for the workshop. I did well, so from there I went and delivered some training, a rapid value training session for the same customer, a great customer."
Did you know before you joined which area of consultancy you wanted to explore?
"I’m a Psychology graduate so I knew I wouldn't go down the finance consultancy route. But after that, I was open to the other areas, and the scheme means you get to see a variety of areas. It was learning it all from scratch, so I was quite open to seeing what I preferred. Now I'm in the Projects stream, which suits me."
What would you say to a graduate who wasn’t coming from an IT or systems background?
"I didn't have any experience with business tech systems when I joined Columbus. I did psychology, so nothing to do with IT. But Psychology, it's useful for understanding people, which is absolutely what the role is all about."
How did you find out you were going to be a Stream Lead on a project for the first time?
"I found out at the project kick-off. I was told I was going to be leading the project stream. Initially, I think they had me supporting the supply chain stream, which didn't make sense for my area of expertise, so they switched me.
Now I run the "Projects" stream on an 18-24 month implementation, I'm responsible for running workshops, capturing requirements, writing specs, and thinking of solutions to clients challenges."
