Working Families: Balancing parenthood and well-being
Delene shares her journey from needing the time off for IVF treatment, going on maternity leave and struggling with her challenges, coming back to work and how Columbus supported her all the way through.
Support
I underwent several rounds of IVF treatment, which at times were emotionally and physically challenging, requiring me to take some time off work. Throughout this journey, Columbus provided incredible support when I needed it most.
As a consultant, my role often involves being on-site with clients. However, when I reached around 23 weeks into my pregnancy, I found it increasingly difficult to manage client visits. My amazing team stepped in to support me by offering more opportunities to work remotely. This flexibility made the transition to maternity leave so much smoother.
Maternity Leave
Once my little boy was born, Columbus went above and beyond sending me some beautiful gifts. Their enhanced maternity leave policy was a huge financial relief, allowing me to take the full 12 months off. This time was invaluable, especially as my son faced some health challenges that required urgent treatment. It was a difficult period for us both as I was struggling with my own well-being throughout much of my maternity leave.
The unwavering support from my manager, who stayed in regular contact to check in on how I was doing and if there was anything that I needed, truly highlights the supportive culture Columbus has to offer.
Returning to work
Understanding the challenges I was facing, my manager took the time to discuss my options as my maternity leave came to an end. I was still navigating some personal difficulties and focusing on my son's ongoing recovery.
Together, we arranged for me to return to work on hours that suited my needs, in a slightly different role that didn’t require any travel. This adjustment allowed me to balance my responsibilities at work while continuing to be there for my son during his recovery.
